NATIONAL MINORITY MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

Graphic of Diverse Peoples

In May, we paid tribute to children and their families in our community who struggle with mental health issues every day. A small percentage of youth will actually access services they need to heal and recover. This number grows even smaller for minority populations due to heavy stigma, and proper access to services.

In July, our focus will be on highlighting the unique struggles of minority groups for National Minority Mental Health Month. Throughout the month, Edgewood will be sharing some of the different challenges, experiences, and paths to healing that minorities suffering from mental health issues may face.

BACK ON TRACK: SAM'S STORY OF HOPE

Smiling Latino Boy Giving Thumbs Up in Library

Before coming to Edgewood, Sam,* an eight-year-old boy, struggled with behavioral problems at school.

Daily, his parents would receive a call from his teachers asking them to pick him up because he was being too disruptive in class. Sam did not have the ability to play with other children his age like most and his behavior at home was disruptive.

Sam's parents were becoming increasingly distraught and called Edgewood, where our multidisciplinary team of staff at the Crisis Stabilization Unit worked with him, his family, as well as his school, to create a plan.

By educating and supporting Sam with programs within his own community, Edgewood was able to stabilize him in his school, with his peers, and with his family.

Louis de Keyser Belden, an Edgewood Board Director Emeritus, passed away May 19, 2017, at the age of 90.

Louis began his involvement with Edgewood over 30 years ago and served on our Board of Directors from 1997 to 2006. He served as Board Treasurer and as a member of the Executive, Development, Investment, and Finance Committees during his decade of service on the board.

We will miss Louis and his many years of dedication to our community and to the children and families of the greater Bay Area.

san mateo pride 2017

Edgewood in the community - more than 400 people stopped by our booth during the San Mateo Pride Festival on June 10. There they learned how Edgewood welcomes members of the LGBT community and offers services that help all ages including our Drop-in Centers for young adults and our Kinship Caregiver Program based in San Mateo for grandparents and other relative caregivers.
SF Shared Schoolyard Girl Monkey Bars

We met more than 100 kids and their families during a community event at New Traditions Elementary School located near Golden Gate Park. The SF Shared Schoolyard Project (organizers of the event) hosts these community fairs in order to give children and families places (schoolyards) to play and gather within walking distance of their homes. To date, over 40 public schools citywide are participating in this program.
